For me, abstract painting and collage are a way of playing with shapes, colours and textures – sometimes carefully planned, sometimes shaped by chance. I’m fascinated by what happens when elements are taken out of their original context and brought together in new ways. The resulting images are less about telling a specific story and more about leaving space for associations, moods and personal thoughts.
Process
The starting point for this artistic research is free, intuitive painting. Led by Anne Lücking-Mewald, the “School of Elefantasy” in Charlottenburg provides a space of possibilities: on the one hand, a physical space with plenty of room, large painting surfaces, a broad palette of colours and a rich selection of tools, brushes and pens. On the other, a metaphysical space opened up through different approaches such as meditation, movement and exercises in perception.
I use what emerges there as material for a further process, applying different methods of destruction, combination and (re)composition. The collages develop in the tension between conscious decisions and chance. I aim to create new connections, draw attention to particular details, create tension or seek harmony. At times, the focus is simply on experiencing the sensual qualities of the material.
Each work is the result of an ongoing process of inner exploration, a sensitive balancing of form, material and effect. Colour, shapes and textures are added layer by layer. The artistic process remains open; through searching and finding, a highly energetic state emerges and continues until what wanted to reveal itself has been found – and a moment of stillness marks the end of the search.
